06 Oct 2008 Don’t Have Eye, Eyetoy Works Too [LittleBigPlanet]
 |  Category: Playstation 3  | 2 Comments

Don’t go throwing away your Playstation 2 Eyetoy, that you may or may not have lying around, just yet as it seems that the predecessor of the current PS3 Playstation Eye also works with LittleBigPlanet. So people who don’t own Eye can also import their own images into the game to be used as stickers and such. I’m planning on trying other web cameras with the LBP beta as well to see if they’re also supported.

Backwards compatibility with Eyetoy is great and a smart way to encourage people to create and capture their own game assets, without forcing them to buy new hardware. Good job, Media Molecule.

Check in later to see if the Logitech Orbit Cam works.

[Udpate] Nope, Logitech Orbit Webcam, while working in video chat, doesn’t work in LBP. On the bright side, Eyetoy’s are quite a bit cheaper than Playstation Eye’s since most of them are probably on clearance shelves out there. I’ve even seen Eye’s for $18.00 plus Eye of Judgement game.

04 Oct 2008 LittleBigPlanet is Cute and Fun and Great [BUY THIS]

For Halloween Yes, I was going to write a bit on my impressions of the beta last, last night, but well, it’s LittleBigPlanet, so I’ve been playing, and it is good.

For those of you who don’t know, LittleBigPlanet is the upcoming game from Media Molecule. The game is a cute (or whatever you want it to look like, see left, more on that in a minute). What comes on the disc is a whole collection of levels for you and three friends to play together in, plus a sack load of materials and tools for you to make your own levels with (thus, Halloween Sackboy over there), complete with moving parts, hazards, enemies, and pretty much anything else you can think of. The tools provided in LBP are surprisingly robust. Once you’re done making your masterpiece, you can upload it to be shared with the millions of LBP players that are sure to be out there through a very suitable looking spherical interface.

Now, a lot of talk surrounding LittleBigPlanet, outside of those who already worship it, has been about whether or not there’d actually be any quality user generated levels to play after one has exhausted the 60+ premade levels that come on the disc. I was a bit concerned myself in that regards, but having spent the last two days playing other people’s levels, I think it’s clear that there is no need to fear, because we’ve got geniuses out there. This one guy, or girl, Geosautus, has created levels of such variety and scope that I find it very hard to believe that they’re not directly from Media Molecule. One level he’s / she’s made, entitled Rocket Man! starts off with an exhilarating, high speed, rocket-powered skateboard ride up a ramp to the stars, followed by a perilous climb down atop googly-eyed, rubber jet planes and glass zeppelins. The whole thing just gives off a great sense of verticality. I did get stuck in some places and it’s not perfect, but I think it’s a great indication of the wonders to come. You need this game.

This is where all the shared levels go.

Observe Sackboy and Sackgirl in their native habitat, these really cute and clever videos take a nature show-ish look at the world of LittleBigPlanet. Episode two just went up on the Playstation Blog, and it’s great. I don’t need to say more, just watch it.

And if you’re still looking for LBP beta keys (like me) boot up the old email program or whatever and hit up playstationbloglbp2000@gmail.com with a request for one. Can’t imagine they’ll last long.

02 Oct 2008 The Lost Will to Play [GTAIV Trophies]
 |  Category: Playstation 3  | One Comment

I was just wondering if Rockstar would be retro patching Grand Theft Auto IV with trophies, and here we have ps3trophies.co.uk revealing what they are. No release date for the patch has been given yet.

So this puts me in a difficult situation. Judging from what just happened with Burnout Paradise trophies, it is likely that trophies will not be awarded for accomplishments pre-patch, which means that despite being about 40% into the game, I will have to start GTAIV all over again when the patch comes out just to get the maximum virtual recognition. Remember when I said I wasn’t really feeling this game yet? Yeah, that’s gone. Now I want to play, but I don’t want to have to double back on any more progress than I need to. On the other hand, what makes Trophies desirable anyways? Do you want the game now that it has trophies? Ah, choices.

Click on for the list, from ps3trophies.co.uk, if you’re interested.
