Not HD, but Pretty Slick. PlaystationEye!
|
Category: Playstation 3
Thanks to Kotaku, the word on the new EyeToy is out. Dubbed simply, Playstation Eye, this new webcam for PS3 supports better resolutions, a multidirectional microphone, and software that’ll let users capture video and photos directly onto the PS3 HDD and add effects to them and stuff. Expect the next wave of gesture controlled games to come to PS3 sometime after the Playstation Eye’s summer release in the US and UK.
Now, I have some questions.
- Will the Playstation Eye be backwards compatible with currently available EyeToy applications? SingStar PS3 doesn’t come out in the States till the fall, so if I buy this, I want to be able to use it on SingStar Pop. Eye will support the EyeToy resolution, albeit at a higher framerate. Possible?
- When’s Eye of Judgement going to come out in the Western world? The Japanese release of Playstation Eye will be bundled with the game. How will we get it?
- How much?
- Is this the plan for chatting over PSN? The press release touts chatting without a headset, and with noise reduction tech and such, could we all end up using Eye as our main means of PSN communication?
Anyone know? Leave a comment.

Hoping to answer what I can and ask more.
1. Looking at the EyeToy specs on engadget.com and gizmodo.com, they mentioned both the framerates (30-120fps) and resolution are adjustable on the PlayStation Eye. I’d imagine and strongly suspect that the Eye is backwards compatible with the EyeToy, it’ll simply drop the resolution and framerate to the lower EyeToy specs.
2. Importing through play-asia.com might be your best option for getting Eye of Judgement bundled with the PlayStation Eye. I’ve been using play-asia.com for my PSP and PS2 imports, no complaints. You’d probably get the PlayStation Eye faster as well.
3. I’d like to know “How Much?” too. No idea. Given the specs, probably $40-$60 given the hardware costs. I’d like to see them price it competitive to the EyeToy ($40) for the PS2.
4. YES!
I’m already using the PS2’s EyeToy on my PS3:

Video chats work fine. Waffals1, AzDragon, CqStang, Elsa, and I have all done video chats with our EyeToys. Currently you need an EyeToy + Headset for video chat. Using the PlayStation Eye, you only need the Eye, since its using USB for both the camera and high-gain Mic.
…let us know what else you find. I’m excited about it. I’d like to see more Eye-compatible games, and the supposed “Creator Software” that’s supposed to come with it for photo/video editing on the PS3 looks decent.
